Manhattan, San Jose and San Francisco occupy the top three positions, but their cost profile differs from that of George Town, Hamilton and other Caribbean locations.

In major United States cities, the pressure largely reflects housing and the cost of professional services. New York’s rental shortage remained evident during the first half of 2026, while Manhattan rents reached record levels in June. In California’s major technology centres, healthcare, housing and transport can absorb a substantial proportion of an expatriate salary.

Caribbean cities operate under different constraints. Small populations limit economies of scale, while many groceries, vehicles and household products must be imported. Freight and distribution therefore become part of the everyday cost base. Several currencies are also linked to the United States dollar, reducing exchange rate fluctuations but leaving households exposed to local inflation and import prices.

The distinction matters when assessing a job offer. An expatriate moving from a cheaper location may receive a substantially higher nominal salary and still have less disposable income after accommodation, schooling, healthcare and transport. Cost of living comparisons are therefore most useful when they replicate the household’s actual spending pattern rather than relying on a single generic consumer price measure.
